The hand has been used as a tool, as a symbol, and as a weapon. As an organ of performance it serves as eyes for the blind, the mute talk with it, and it has become a symbol of salutation, supplication, and condemnation. The hand has played a part in the creative life of every known society.
Hands have shaped puppets since the beginning of time. Puppets vary in type, purpose, and have been made out of every conceivable material.
Natural rubber is a milky fluid, called latex.
It was first found in the inner bark of many tropical trees. Indigenous peoples used it to make balls for sport. When shipped to England, it was fashioned into balloons, made into erasers. In America, Charles Goodyear discovered a process to improve its strength and flexibility: the process was called vulcanization. Toymakers moved from using bisque, china, and composite materials to using vulcanized rubber, or latex.
